DSUSD Library Fine Procedures
Purpose
This document outlines the conditions under which fines will be assessed in Desert Sands.
Damaged or lost instructional materials, including textbooks, Chromebooks, and tablets may
incur a charge per Education Code Section 19910-19911, 48904 - 48904.3, and the DSUSD
Technology Responsible Use Policy. It also provides options for students to replace lost or
damaged textbooks or library materials in a cost-effective manner.
Reasons for a Fine
Lost Items
If a library item is lost, a fine will be issued for the replacement cost of the item. This cost
reflects the price of purchasing a new copy to ensure that the library collection remains
complete.
Major Damage
Fines will be issued for items returned with significant damage that renders them unreadable or
unusable. Examples of major damage include:
In such cases, the student will be charged the replacement cost of the item.
No Fine
Minor Damage
If a book or item is returned with minor damage that can be easily repaired, no fine will be
issued. Examples of minor damage include:
-
Frayed edges
-
Bent or dog-eared pages
-
Spine separation
-
Missing barcode
-
Library label or sticker damage
-
Torn pages, provided that the pages are returned and can be reattached
-
Scribbles or markings
Age of Book
No fines will be issued for damage or loss of books that are determined to be too old or worn to
warrant replacement.
Chromebooks
Damaged Chromebook/Tablet: $20
Lost or damaged beyond repair Chromebook/Tablet: $100
Chromebook charger replacement/lost: Retail price (please check with your school site library)
Fine Alternatives
Students have the option to purchase the replacement book or item directly from a vendor if this
is more cost-effective than paying the fine. In such cases, the student may choose this option
instead of paying the full replacement cost through the library.
Guidelines:
Book must be in good condition
Replacement books must be an exact match to the lost book (i.e.hardcover for hardcover; softcover for softcover). Fine not to exceed $20.
Refunds
A refund for a lost book, returned in good condition, that is later found will be issued up to one
year from the date of payment.
